biografi

| First
concert
"It was They Might Be Giants at the old
9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., on my 16th birthday. There were
fliers everywhere for an upcoming Gaye Bikers on Acid show. I forget
who the opening band was, but we weren't into them at all, so we sat
in a booth in the corner and tried to act cool. It seemed like
everyone else in the club was smoking, so we bought a box of
Marlboro menthol cigarettes from a vending machine and proceeded to
make ourselves very ill. People were jumping up and down. I came
home way after my curfew and got in a shitload of trouble, but I
didn't care.

"I would have to say Bad Religion at the
Hollywood Palladium on their tour for Against the Grain. I grew up
in a tiny little desert town and never got much chance to go to
shows, so it was a big deal to drive all the way to L.A. to see
bands play. I had been a huge fan for four years before I got the
chance to watch them perform live, and, fuck, was I blown away! I
was right up in front, pushed against the barricade, my ribs
bruising from the crushing force behind me. It was unlike anything I
had ever seen. So much fucking energy. So loud! So fast! I remember
[singer] Greg Graffin saluting all of the crowd-surfers. There was
mass chaos in the crowd-sweat and ten-hole Doc Marten boots. Some
kid came over with a bloody nose. As we stumbled back to our car
after the show, I kept thinking, 'Holy shit, what the fuck was that?'"

experience
"[Dinosaur Jr. frontman] J Mascis' guitar
was so fucking loud my ears rang for three days afterward. I thought
I would never be able to hear again. But it was still a kickass
show."
